Our heroes wisely choose to explore the oasis during the day and find that the broad pond, that is the center of the oasis, is tainted. They move along the edge of the pond to the north end where they find the defiled cemetery for the honored dead of Sarenrae. The buildings have long been destroyed and they find nothing of worth. They move toward the well to examine it when Lacedon emerge from the pond and attack. They are quickly dispatched and the group returns to the well to examine it. They drop a light into the well and find 4 stone sarcophagi in the bottom of the well. They know, from talking with Lion of the Five Heavens, that vampire spawn are known to be in the area. They guess that these sarcophagi belong to the vampire spawn and decide to return the next day with a plan to retrieve the sarcophagi from the well.
They decide to head over to the west side of the pond, where they can see a large obelisk. They discover a desecrated Sun Spire. Fiora decides that this once holy object of Sarenrae needs to be cleaned up and starts attempting to remove the foul markings from the Sun Spire. Fiora is overcome by a surge of divine energy and the Sun Spire is quickly engulfed in fire. After a few seconds the flames die out to expose a clean and re-sanctified Sun Spire.
They return to camp and design a pulley system to extract the sarcophagi from the well and return the next morning. They set up and Kahn and Duran drop into the well to tie up the sarcophagi. With some effort, they are able to extract each sarcophagi and open them in the daylight. The vampire spawn, exposed to the full might of the sun, quickly start to smolder and as they run for the cover of the tree line, burst into flame and are destroyed. With the threat of the vampire spawn removed, they head over to the main structure on the cliff.
The find the burnt out remains of an old mosque and there appears to be be something inside of it. They see the skeleton of an Ettin standing inside the burnt out remains. Fiora throws a fireball at the skeleton and it lumbers out of the burnt out structure to attack them. They quickly dispatch the Ettin skeleton and see a shining sword laying on the floor. They move in to check it out and Kahn is the first to reach the blade and find its guardian, Fadiyah-al-quirym. The paladin’s spectre rises from the blood stain next to the blade and attacks Kahn. The group starts backing out of the structure, as they remember that spectres are powerless in the light of the sun, but not before Fiora is struck by the spectre and loses 2 levels. Duran starts trying to use his shield to reflect the sun’s rays onto the spectre and it seems to work but Fadiyah-al-quirym quickly drops back into the floor to hide. During the quick fight, Sahlira runs into the mosque and grabs the sword off the floor and runs back out into the daylight. The group holds outside the mosque waiting for Fadiyah-al-quirym to resurface but with nobody in the mosque, it proves to be a long wait. Sahlira, still holding the sword, reenters the mosque and the spectre rises back up and attacks her. Sahlira’s quick reflexes save her from a strike from the spectre and the group quickly attack it. After a few rounds of this the spectre is vanquished.
They reenter the mosque and investigate the blood stain and Shurooq casts a spell to see what occurred in this place long ago. When she comes out of her trance, she tells the group that Fadiyah-al-quirym arrived at the mosque, being pursued by the vampire spawn and encountered the, then alive, Ettin. Fadiyah-al-quirym defeated the Ettin but not before succumbing to her wounds and dying inside the mosque. The vampire spawn apparently were prevented from entering the mosque. She relates how both the Ettin and Fadiyah-al-quirym arose from the dead, the Ettin as a zombie and Fadiyah-al-quirym as the spectre they encountered. The Ettin ended up losing all its flesh and becoming the skeleton that they found, during the long years that they both have resided here. Looters removed the body of Fadiyah-al-quirym but were unable to retrieve the sword as the spectre attacked all that came near it. Fiora took the sword, Dawns Swift Burning, and attempted to discover what powers it contained but as she tried, she found the sword dissolve into glittering particles of light that quickly attached themselves to her bow. Dawns Swift Burning was no more, but Fiora’s bow now had the power that was in it and apparently the blessing of Sarenrae.
During the groups investigations of the oasis they spotted the symbol to Urgothoa in the depths of the pond and Fiora used her Telekinesis ability to move the stones that made up the symbol and break the curse that was on the pond. Time would now restore the pond and enable travelers to use the oasis again without fear. Having done all they set out to do they returned to camp and brought the priests of Sarenrae to the site. The group had no way to remove the curse on the mosque, that brought all who died within it back as undead, but the priests of Sarenrae were able to remove it. The priests rewarded the group for their efforts and after helping to clean up the site a bit the next day, the heroes resumed their trek to Katapesh.
The next two days were fairly uneventful but as they rode into the oasis, that they were planning to stop at for the evening, they noticed a cloud of dust on the horizon indicating a group moving quickly toward the oasis. Fearing the worst, the heroes moved to intercept and found a group of humans and gnolls closing in on them. They engaged the first group of humans and quickly sent the survivors running. Running right into the blades of the gnolls, who quickly turned on them. The gnolls also started attacking the group and an Ettin and a Gnoll sorcerer arrived to assist. The sorcerer started throwing Fireballs into the group until Fiora got a lucky shot in on the Gnoll, killing her. The rest of the group proved to be no match for the heroes and were quickly defeated. The group cleaned up the site and the caravan set up camp for the night.
Only one more day before they should arrive in Katapesh. For some it is a return home, for others a first time to see the wonder that is Katapesh. Will there contact, Rayhan, be able to unlock the secrets of the Scroll of Kakishon? What will the markets of Katapesh have in store for our heroes?
